Raising funds and awareness for native species

In collaboration with local brewery, Huss Brewing Co., the Phoenix Zoo developed an ongoing line of custom beers aimed at promoting native species conservation. This exclusive series of limited edition beers is sold only in the Phoenix Zoo gift shop, with each can design featuring a native species of conservation concern that the Zoo actively supports. New cans are released every six months, encouraging visitors to collect them while learning about the diverse wildlife the Zoo helps protect.

The primary goal of this project was to raise both awareness and funds for the conservation efforts of each featured species. It also aims to highlight the Phoenix Zoo's longstanding commitment to conservation work, both in the field and through its direct involvement with these species on-site. The cans feature an eye-catching series of illustrations and silhouettes, carefully crafted to balance vivid hues with the more neutral earth tones found in the species and their natural habitats.

Can Design

Each can front features a hand-drawn illustration of the focus species and a custom typographic treatment of the species' name, doubling as the beer name. On the back, a brief overview highlights the Zoo’s ongoing work with the featured species, alongside a silhouette of the animal, adding both educational value and visual depth to the design.

The can's colors rotate between base hues of green, purple, and blue, while gold, black, and beige accents remain consistent throughout the series, providing a cohesive visual identity.

Marketing

To promote the series and announce each new edition, a coordinated set of social media posts and on-grounds signage was developed. Sandwich boards and banners were strategically placed throughout the Zoo to advertise the limited edition beers available, helping to drive awareness and purchases.

Merchandise

In addition to the beers, our gift shop partner, Event Network, offered a range of merchandise with each rollout. Each featured species had its own accompanying collection including a t-shirt, baseball cap, coasters and beer glass.

These products were sold exclusively in the Phoenix Zoo gift shop, allowing a wider range of guests to engage with the conservation message and collect unique, limited edition gear.
