Honoring Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.'s legacy
Each year, Arizona State University hosts a Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Celebration across all of its campuses, honoring the life and legacy of the renowned civil rights leader. In a design competition, the junior class from ASU's Visual Communication Design program was tasked with creating a campaign that reflects the university's brand while celebrating the legacy and the tenets set forth by Dr. King through his lifelong servant-leadership.
The result was Our Turn Now, a campaign built to highlight recent events in history underscoring that the fight for equality is far from over. By drawing comparisons between current events and their historical counterparts, the campaign emphasized that the struggle for equality is not confined to the past, but remains an ongoing battle in the present day. The campaign stressed that it is no longer the responsibility of previous generations, but rather ours—the current generation—to step up and advocate for the rights and freedoms of both ourselves and those around us.
Our Turn Now went on to become a finalist in the 2022-23 design competition.
Identity
The campaign's identity exploration was confined by the competition guidelines, which required the use of only official ASU colors and brand typeface, Neue Haas Grotesk. Given these constraints and the concept of highlighting "our" contributions in comparison to historical counterparts, the campaign's identity was built using ASU Gold, ASU Rich Black, and ASU Rich White.
ASU Gold was prominently featured throughout the identity to highlight current events. This was translated to the slogan, with the word "NOW" enclosed in gold squares, while the rest of the text remained in black and white.

Key Art
The campaign's key art incorporates gold in the slogan to highlight the focus on current events. Designed using a 3x3 grid, it juxtaposes black-and-white historical photos with a contemporary image, creating a visual dialogue between past and present.

Marketing
The campaign’s identity, originally inspired by the March on Washington, was expanded and adapted across a range of advertising materials, including posters and social media assets.
Featuring six distinct versions, the campaign was positioned around campus media to engage students and faculty with Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr's messages of servant leadership and ASU's celebratory events.

Event Collateral
The client requested that the campaign be applied to key deliverables for two main events: an awards breakfast and the March on West. Both events celebrate community members who reflect Dr. King’s values and educate K–12 students about the Civil Rights Movement.
The requested collateral included t-shirts for all events participants and awardees as well as a vinyl banner for the march. Winning entries in a contest for Valley K-12 students were also to be featured as bookmarks and posters at the awards breakfast. Additional promotional collateral including lanyards and pins were also proposed.
