Getting closer to jaguars and mountain lions

The Big Cats of Arizona exhibit, which opened in April 2025, redefines how guests experience the state’s native big cats—jaguars and mountain lions—through immersive design and up-close encounters. Featuring multiple viewing angles, expansive glass panels, and the Zoo’s first-ever overhead “catwalk,” the exhibit brings visitors within striking proximity of these elusive predators.

Our team was tasked with developing a visual identity for the exhibit, to be implemented across educational signage and marketing assets. The identity was designed to reflect the diverse habitats these cats call home, while supporting the Zoo’s mission to inform and inspire. Through a system of interpretive panels, interactive elements, and cohesive design assets, we aimed to engage guests and deepen their understanding of the ecological importance of these iconic animals.

Identity

The Big Cats of Arizona logo system and color palette were thoughtfully developed to represent the ecological diversity of Arizona’s landscapes. While the state is commonly associated with desert environments, it also features expansive forested regions that provide essential habitat for native big cat species. The visual identity captures this range reinforcing the exhibit’s focus on education and conservation.

To maintain consistency with the Phoenix Zoo’s brand, the exhibit's typographic system was built using the Zoo’s primary typeface, Avenir, ensuring a seamless integration across larger contexts.

Exhibit Signage

Once the visual identity was established, it was applied across a series of informational panels throughout the exhibit. This included four primary panels which incorporated interactive elements to increase visitor engagement. These panels present educational content on the history of big cats and highlight ongoing conservation efforts for species native to Arizona.

Complementing the main panels, smaller interpretive labels were installed at each animal viewing area. These labels provide species-specific information and were intentionally designed to align with the visual system used for other species labels throughout the Zoo, ensuring consistency in the overall visitor experience.

A supplementary panel showcases additional conservation initiatives led by the Phoenix Zoo, focusing on native wildlife beyond big cats.

Largely a donor-funded exhibit, Big Cats of Arizona also features donor dedications. These were thoughtfully designed to bridge the Zoo’s existing donor signage—crafted from rusted metal and brushed aluminum—with the new exhibit’s identity, creating a cohesive and integrated visual presentation.

Marketing

To coincide with the exhibit's grand opening, a comprehensive multiplatform marketing campaign was launched, building on the established visual identity. The campaign featured cut-out photos of the Zoo’s resident big cats, paired with habitat silhouettes and color palettes drawn from the exhibit’s signage system for visual continuity.

The campaign extended across print and digital billboards, social media posts and sponsored stories, exclusive staff and member t-shirts, and direct mail invitations for the opening celebration ensuring a cohesive and engaging brand presence across all touchpoints.
